The UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital exists so that all the surgery services and cancer care that South Texans need are right here — at home.
We provide patients the full spectrum of care they need without leaving South Texas. No matter what you need, you have our dedicated team to help.
You must have a referral to receive care at the UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital.
- If you already have a provider at UT Health San Antonio, your provider may admit you to the UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital if you need intense nursing care, surgery or cancer care or another procedure.
- If you don’t have a provider at UT Health San Antonio, visit your current provider to request a referral for a UT Health San Antonio provider.
How to prepare for your visit
UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital patients and families can expect to follow these steps:

1. Meet with your UT Health San Antonio provider
Schedule a visit with your UT Health San Antonio provider.

2. Create your care plan
You, your provider and your family work with your care team to create a tailored care plan with treatments that work with your lifestyle.
As an academic health center, you have access to the most advanced treatments, including clinical trial options, delivered by world-renowned doctors, instilling confidence in your treatment journey.
As part of your plan, your provider may refer you to the UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital. Hospital-based services include surgery, cancer treatment and acute care, such as intense nursing care.

3. Complete pre-registration
If your provider refers you to the hospital, we will contact you to complete pre-registration before you arrive. You play a key role in this process by updating your personal information in MyChart, ensuring its accuracy.
During pre-registration, you can request a financial counselor. They will meet with you to talk about your billing and payment options if needed.

4. Arrive to the hospital for treatment
Come to the hospital for your scheduled surgery, therapy, rehabilitation or emergency care.

5. Work with your care management team
Our care management team works with you to manage your care within the UT Health San Antonio health care system. You meet with your case manager at the hospital. They help:
- Make a personalized care plan that fits your needs and goals.
- Work with your care team to get the support services you need while in the hospital make sure your needs and goals are met.
- Communicate with your different providers.
- Arrange care you may need after you leave the hospital. You’ll receive a discharge plan, as well as community resources. Your care manager can also help with logistics, such as scheduling and getting to appointments.

6. Go to outpatient visits as needed
Talk with your care management about any questions you have. You can also view your discharge plan and care summary in MyChart.
