The cost of your care depends on the services you receive. It also depends on your health insurance plan and how much it covers. Our cost estimator tool can help you calculate your bill ahead of time.

For some services, your insurance company may need to confirm how much they will pay before you receive the service. This process is called pre-authorization. Our financial services team helps with pre-authorization. We work with your insurance to get prior approval for your scheduled services.
If we don’t get pre-authorization before your appointment, we may need to reschedule. Without pre-authorization from your insurance, you are responsible for paying the full cost of treatment. You can also contact your insurance (their phone number is on the back of your insurance card) before you receive treatment to find out if prior authorization is required.
You will receive your hospital bill by mail. If you have a MyChart account, you can also view and pay your bill in MyChart.
When you get your bill depends on how fast your insurance company reviews the insurance claim.

When you see a doctor or other health care provider, you may owe certain out-of-pocket costs, like a copayment, coinsurance, or deductible. You may have additional costs or have to pay the entire bill if you see a provider or visit a health care facility that isn’t in your health plan’s network.
“Out-of-network” means providers and facilities that haven’t signed a contract with your health plan to provide services. Out-of-network providers may be allowed to bill you for the difference between what your plan pays and the full amount charged for a service. This is called “balance billing.” This amount is likely more than in-network costs for the same service and might not count toward your plan’s deductible or annual out-of-pocket limit.
“Surprise billing” is an unexpected balance bill. This can happen when you can’t control who is involved in your care—like when you have an emergency or when you schedule a visit at an in-network facility but are unexpectedly treated by an out-of-network provider. Surprise medical bills could cost thousands of dollars depending on the procedure or service.

A hospital outpatient department (HOPD) are clinical care sites that are part of a hospital that provide outpatient appointments for diagnosis, treatment, preventive care, follow-up care and other medical services for patients who don't require overnight hospitalization.
On April 1, 2025, many clinics within the UT Health Medical Arts and Research Center and Mays Cancer Center became hospital outpatient departments of UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital.

Becoming part of our hospital, these clinics must adhere to the same rigorous accreditation and regulatory standards set for hospitals by The Joint Commission to ensure high levels of clinical quality, safety and compliance. Patients can have confidence that they are receiving care from sites that meet the highest-level of quality criteria for health care.
HOPDs also help make the transition from the outpatient "clinical" setting to the inpatient "hospital" setting smoother and more coordinated.

Depending on the care received and your insurance plan, you may see two separate charges on your billing statement: one for the providers services (for care you received from the provider), and one for the facility or clinic. This is called split billing and follows national billing guidelines. While it may look like a duplicate, each charge reflects a different part of your visit.
