When spinal stenosis left John Toohey, retired orthopaedic surgeon and former assistant dean at UT Health San Antonio, with excruciating pain and few options — the healer became the inaugural patient at the newly opened UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital.

Included in the book are promising research findings on Latino cancer and strategies for new research covering the entire cancer continuum, from advances in risk assessment, prevention, screening, detection, diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and policy.

“This is not normal hospital food, for sure,” said Johnna Kemp, the cafeteria’s director of food and nutrition. “We consider ourselves a fine-dining establishment.”

The atmosphere was electric with a mix of anticipation and celebration as employees of the UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital walked through the doors on opening day in the brand-new hospital. Excitement filled the air, and emotions were high as employees gathered for a team huddle to be inspired by heartfelt words from hospital and university leadership.
