The Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) has awarded accreditation to the UT Health San Antonio laboratory following a recent on-site inspection by CAP inspectors. The inspection team included practicing pathology and laboratory medicine professionals. Known for its rigorous standards, CAP accreditation elevates quality and reduces risk—an important way laboratories contribute to improved patient outcomes.

“I want to thank our laboratory staff, clinical partners, and hospital leadership for their dedication and support throughout this process. Achieving accreditation reflects our shared commitment to delivering excellent patient care through laboratory medicine,” said Eric Salazar, M.D., Ph.D., Medical Director of Clinical Laboratories.
Jeffery L. Flowers, MBA, FACHE, Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital, added: “This recognition affirms our team’s collective expertise and unwavering commitment to the highest standards of excellence. Each of our successes builds on the last and reinforces the strength and dedication of our team. Together, we are elevating our reputation as South Texas’s destination for world-class care.”
During the CAP accreditation process—which ensures the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients—inspectors review laboratory records, quality control procedures, staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety programs, and overall management. These reviews help confirm that activities reflect the most current best practices.
With more than 23,000 participating laboratories, the CAP also offers proficiency testing/external quality assessment (PT/EQA) programs, quality improvement tools, and practice guidelines to promote excellence across all areas of laboratory medicine. Built on a foundation of pathologist expertise, the College of American Pathologists partners with laboratories worldwide to drive operational excellence, achieve diagnostic confidence, and ensure the best patient care.
“UT Health San Antonio's Laboratory demonstrates leadership, innovation and a passionate commitment to standards of excellence while providing the highest quality services for patients,” said Richard M. Scanlan, M.D., FCAP, chair of the CAP’s Council on Accreditation. “The CAP congratulates UT Health San Antonio on its recent accreditation.”
